Miscon Schedule 2016

It’s that time again! I’m heading out to Missoula, and I hope to get to say hello to some of you guys there. I’ll also have copies of WOLFSBANE available in the dealer’s room.

Take special note of my reading–I’ll be reading from a never-before-seen (or heard) short story!

Fri 5:00 – 5:50 PM, Beyond The Fangs, Ballroom B
Moderator: Diana Pharaoh Francis (Di); Panelists: Jim Butcher, Diana Pharaoh Francis (Di), Julie Frost, Rhiannon Held, Randy Henderson

Urban Fantasy encompasses more than just vampires and werewolves, yet it seems that the fanged creatures of the night have captured the limelight. What other creatures, dangerous and ghastly, lurk around dark city corners?

Sat 10:00 – 10:50 AM, Storytelling in Once Upon a Time, Jefferson
Moderator: Krista Wallace; Panelists: Rhiannon Held, C.L Norman (Candi), Krista Wallace

Let’s talk about storytelling techniques the writers of Once Upon a Time use to tell the characters’ stories, including the use of flashback. What do they do well? Where do they miss the mark?

Sat 11:00 – 11:50 AM, The Role of Stories, Gallatin
Panelists: Carol Berg, Rhiannon Held, Meradeth Houston

Every culture might interpret the same story in vastly different ways (Ex: Hamlet). Unique cultures can also independently create startlingly similar stories. What is it about stories that make them such an entrenched part of human culture? Why is the morality tale the preferred way to instruct youth in societal norms? Is it possible that stories are the key to understanding what it means to be human?

Sat 3:00 – 3:50 PM, Fiction Slam Readings, Tent By the Trees (1)
Moderator: Rhiannon Held; Panelists: Julie Frost, Rhiannon Held, Frog Jones
Come hear your favorite pro read a selection of their work.
1500: Rhiannon Held
1520: Julia Frost
1540: Frog Jones

Sat 4:00 – 4:50 PM, Crafting Unique Titles, Gallatin
Moderator: Rhiannon Held; Panelists: Brenda Carre, Diana Pharaoh Francis (Di), Rhiannon Held, Laurey Patten

How much work do I put into a title for my book or short story? How do I chose one? What titles worked for you? Are the titles themselves becoming tropes?

Sun 11:00 – 11:50 AM, Meet & Greet/Signing: Rhiannon Held/Guy Pace, Hotel Lobby of Doom
Panelists: Rhiannon Held, Guy Pace

Meet a few of our authors, get signatures, and see what they’re up to these days.

Sun 5:00 – 5:50 PM, Depicting Emotions in Fiction, Ballroom B
Moderator: Spencer G. Ellsworth; Panelists: Spencer G. Ellsworth, Rhiannon Held, Michael Hodges, Christopher Paolini

Do you remember the last time you cried during a really good book? Or how about that time you laughed out loud to the embarrassment of all? Have you ever wanted to capture that sort of emotion in your own writing? In this panel we’ll discuss how to write killer scenes that will have your readers so emotionally entangled, it’ll take a psychologist to get them out.

Mon 11:00 – 11:50 AM, What I Learned Along the Path of Failure, Ballroom B
Moderator: Rhiannon Held; Panelists: Jim Butcher, Rhiannon Held, Robin Hobb, J.A. Pitts

Writing basics that no one ever tells you. “I thought I could do this but everyone in the room looked at me like I had three heads.” Don’t apologize for something you haven’t learned yet. Learn from your mistakes. Join us for a discussion about giving and receiving critique the right way. Tips and tricks to turn that rejection into something positive.
