The Next Big Thing Week 10

I’ve been tagged by Esther and Frog Jones in a fun little game going around at the moment: The Next Big Thing. The Next Big Thing is a weekly blog post where tagged authors talk about one of their works in progress.

What is the working title of your book?

Cubs. It’s book 3 in my current series. Silver is out now, and Tarnished will be out next summer. The title might change, of course!

Where did the idea come from for the book?

Book 3 grew out of pure character interaction. In book 2, a new character readers haven’t met yet gets to be a big part of Andrew and Silver’s lives, and I started thinking that while book 2 ended happily, the new character wouldn’t necessarily get along with everyone long-term. So book 3 grew out of me wondering what kind of sparks everyone would strike off each other.

What genre does your book fall under?

Urban fantasy! Specifically (as you may have guessed) with werewolves.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I haven’t chosen the right person for Silver yet, but Andrew I’d definitely love to have played by Matt Bomer. He’s got the right build, lean and fit rather than bulky, and he can infuse his characters with great intelligence and humor.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

I’m going to have to be coy on that one, because book 3 includes spoilers for book 2, but Andrew and Silver have to deal with the return of some powerful enemies they made in book 2.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

My series is currently published by Tor, and I have an agent.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

As I recall, the discovery draft took around three months, but not continuously. I paused in the middle for a final polishing revision on book 2.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

My readers might have a better idea of this than me, but I think I’d compare myself to Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, for the way we both look at werewolf politics from the inside.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

In some ways, what inspired this book are the books that came before it. By the time I was outlining book 3 in my head, I had gotten to know my characters so well that I desperately wanted to figure out what happened to them!

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Those familiar with my first book will already know that I love to focus on werewolf culture. Book 3, as you might guess from the title, adds werewolf children to the mix. Lots of urban fantasy focuses on gorgeous childless twenty-somethings, so I thought it would be fun to explore all the interesting emotions around having or not having children.
