Vices

I own too many clothes.

This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been around me at this time of the year in past years. Around this time in the fall my choir has its annual rummage sale, and I purge my closet to get things to donate. The theory is that after a year of buying new (to me) items at the Value Village every other week, I’ll clear out a similar number of items that I don’t wear and achieve closet neutrality.

“Theory”.

It’s not that I don’t have a big bag of clothes to send! It’s the ratio of rummage to clothes staying is about 1:4 or 5. It’s my dirty little secret that my entire wardrobe has never fit inside my closet since I started being in charge of it myself. Obviously I’m just stalling until I can afford a place with a bigger closet (duh). It mostly functions just fine anyway because some of the stuff is in the dirty clothes hamper at any given point, so I just don’t put everything back on the shelves immediately after laundry day.

Besides, of all the unnecessary vices I could have, at least buying thrift store clothing doesn’t give me heart disease or diabetes or liver failure! I consider it an entertainment budget. Spend $15 on a couple new shirts, be entertained with the Thrill of the Hunt for an hour!

Still means purge day is difficult. I might wear this! I used to wear it! I just…forgot about it lately. No, don’t leave me! I’ll wear you more this year, I promise!

In the end, I’ve put my “maybe” pile aside to go through them next weekend. Can’t do this all at once, after all.
